NCHRP NATIONAL COOPERATIVE HIGHWAY RESEARCH PROGRAM REPORT 577
Guidelines for the Selection of Snow and Ice Control Materials to Mitigate Environmental Impacts
This study from 2007 was an outstanding work. It rings true today as the standard for ice management hasn’t changed much in the last few decades, although the new wave of techniques and technology is ready for the public to take advantage. NCHRP report discusses the “Operational and Performance Considerations” of Ice melt, “Impacts to the natural environment”, “Impacts to Infrastructure and Vehicles”, “Analytical Methods Used to Measure Attributes of Snow and Ice Control Materials”, “General Assessment of Information”, “Effects of Snow and Ice Control Materials on Reinforcing Steel Corrosion”, and an incredible amount of other useful information. At 200+ pages, it is not necessarily a quick read, but each chapter of the study can be selected, studied and put in to practice quickly as needed. Knowing the information in this study can help any snow management company become more efficient and more profitable.
